Christmas/New Year 2016 was filled with lots of get-togethers and pigging out that I couldn’t find time to write about some of the places I went to. So before everything gets piled up (again), let me start telling you about my new favorite place in Tagaytay.

Andro and I were planning where to go for our Christmas date last year when I suddenly remembered Tagaytay and how I miss it, so we came up with the idea to celebrate there.

Originally, our choice was Breakfast at Antonio’s (my favorite) but he wanted to try something new.

Balay Dako

Days before the date, he told me to get ready early morning because the place gets full easily. The only clue I had was that it was a buffet place. We ended up dining at Balay Dako (which meant Big House). The place feels like your grandparents’ house that always welcomes you and serves you good food.

The house has 2 floors, the top floor is the buffet area while the lower area seemed like the lunch and dinner area (interior looked similar to Breakfast at Antonio’s). The interior of the buffet area is one of a kind. Large glass windows welcome the sun light and show you a view of the Taal Volcano. We ate outside, where tables and couches were provided. Big umbrellas were also placed in case it got too sunny.

Inside the buffet area

The buffet was every breakfast lover’s heaven. It has everything that you can crave for breakfast. Bread or other kinds of pastries? Check! They also have lots of spreads, and my favorite kesong puti. Rice and viand combo? Check! You can even make your own fried rice! Fruits and salads? Check! Filipino breakfast? YES! They have –silog combos, Puto Bumbong (!!!), Native Delicacies, TAHO!!! Ginataan, Champorado, Lugaw; name it, they probably have it! I really wanted to try everything but I just couldn’t resist prioritizing my favorites and by the time I was done eating taho, I was already full.

Bread Station

Pesto Cream Cheese, Pimiento Cream Cheese, Herbed Garlic Cream Cheese, Kesong Puti, etc.

Make your own fried rice toppings

Infused water with fruits, Calamansi Ginger, Iced Tea, Mango Juice (left to right)

Native Delicacies

Fruits and Salad Section

Viand Area (tapa, corned beef, tocino, longganisa, dilis, etc.) and a friendly reminder

Some of our favorites: fresh kesong puti, the butter from the puto bumbong, corned beef (we’ve loved this ever since we first tried it in Breakfast at Antonio’s), sinigang soup (this was cooked in a different style, not sure if it was Ilonggo or Ilocano style, sorry!), and making your own fried rice.

Puto Bumbong

I might be biased but I really think that you can never go wrong with any Antonio’s restaurant. This is my new favorite because you get so much more with the same quality (from other Antonio’s restaurants) for a cheaper price. It’s really sulit! Balay Dako surely feels more of a home than a house. I can’t wait for my next visit!
