Ooh, Ooma!

Last Saturday, we braved the heavy rains to finally try Ooma. I thought it was inside the Powerplant mall but it was actually located across Powerplant, near Dean & Deluca. We arrived an hour after their opening and thankfully got a table before the queue got longer. The search for Ooma was a little confusing since we weren’t that familiar with the area but after trying their food, we knew that it was worth the shot!

Soft Shell Crab Taco Maki, Php 199.00 (open-faced temaki wrap, crispy soft shell crab, aligue mayo, ebiko)

This was what we had for appetizer. You get two pieces of the taco and they recommend that you eat it using your hands. I didn’t mind getting my hands messy because it was just the best! It set the standard for the other dishes we ordered! The cream on top definitely balanced the different tastes in the ingredients of the dish. It was just so good. This dish became a new favorite!

For our main dishes, we ordered Scallops and Tuna Aburi Maki, Salmon Skin Aburi Maki and Uni Udon:

Scallops and Tuna Aburi Maki, Php 295.00 (torched scallop, tuna cucumber, sesame seeds, nori crumbs, scallion, teriyaki sauce, spicy mayo and kimchi aioli)

We went for this dish because I asked the waiter what he would recommend for a spicy lover like me. I liked the dish, it had a distinct flavor but it didn’t satisfy the spiciness I was looking for.

Salmon Skin Aburi Maki, Php 275.00 (torched salmon, crispy salmon skin, asparagus, wasabi aioli, cream cheese, teriyaki sauce)

I like this better than the scallops and tuna aburi maki. This was a sweet dish for me and I ate more of this than the other. Haha! The salmon and cream cheese are perfect matches. They really go well together in this dish. And I hope they have a spicy version of this one soon!

Uni Udon, Php 495.00 (fresh uni, shrimp, onion, nori crumbs, scallion, uni cream sauce)

Most of our orders arrived one after the other but we had to wait for about 15 minutes for this one. It actually made me expect more because Ooma has been satisfying our hunger in great ways so far. When the dish arrived, it really looked like carbonara pasta to me; white creamy sauce but on thick noodles (udon). True enough, when we tried it, it tasted like carbonara with some uni and shrimp bits. We were a little disappointed with this dish because we wanted more of the uni flavor but it failed to deliver.

Soft Shell Crab Taco Maki

Overall, braving the rains for Ooma was still worth it! I'm a Korean food lover but I think I just converted to Japanese cuisine after trying Ooma. We fell in love with their soft shell crab taco maki that we even ordered another for “dessert!” How about you guys, what are your favorites from Ooma? Tell me so I know what to order on our next visit! :)
